Total of 15 gusty members had participated in this 8 days paint-out tour from 17 Dec till 24 Dec.
Upon arrival at Seam Reap Airport and going through a snail speed of custom check, testing our
patience, a cool breeze welcomed us to a place that had a magnificent past. Fitting to the title of a typical
"city dweller", we all came with cameras big and small to record "tales" that we want to tell our friends
and relatives. However better than most people, we are able to unveil the much-anticipated sceneries
through our brushes upon the canvases.
Chosen for its convenient location, we were stationed at Red Piano Guest-house that was located at the
heart of the city. Most of the days we departed to Angkor by 930am after having our breakfast. First two
days were considered the most challenging for most of us, as we have difficulty capturing the light due
to sunlight changing quickly. We were also overwhelmed by the great details of the temples’ sculpture
and the color variation. Different mediums varied from ink, pencil, watercolor, oil, acrylic to pastel had
been explored in this paint-out tour. The situation was a bit discouraging; as we had to undergo a lot of
on spot art critics from the passerby tourist group while we were painting.
Anyway, we gradually overcame all these after going through a few rounds of warm up exercise and
realized the tips of getting a better position with a compass thus enabling us to avoid the direct hot sun.
The results became more and more encouraging since then and we all managed to churn out quite a
few better paintings that record our feelings at that very moment. Our creative minds had enabled us to
paint all the different temples with various architectural styles and we could truly enjoy painting on
different scenic location under the sunny daylight with cool and refreshing temperature. Critics did not
distract us anymore after a while, as we don’t really understand various kinds of languages. We had
taken them as songs of compliment and were totally engrossed in our painting process.
We did not waste our spare evening hours everyday either after we finished our paint-out. We were
divided into a few small troops and conquered different eating places ranging from roadside hawkers to
5 stars restaurants. After dinners, massages become one of the luxurious routine relaxation exercises
for some of us. Nevertheless, some of our budget killer masters turned the local souvenir market up
side down and into a battlefield.
On the average, each individual managed to produce one to two paintings each day. We had learned to
paint decisively and rapidly on the spot, and realized our greater potential after going through this
intensive, mind torturing, hard effort but satisfactory paint-out tour.
