Tips from our instructors - a series of insights into learning art

Q: What are the challenges faced by beginners who have just started their journey
     of learning painting?  (Part 2)
Do I have 'talent'?
This is a common question when deciding to
learn painting. It has always been mistaken as
and whether it is worth our effort to start.

We should realise that there are different types
of talent. Some are good at drawing. Some are
colourists. Some like to express their views and
opinions through paintings. Others enjoy
expressing new ideas.

Different people have different talent. And art
promotes expression. That is the beauty of
doing art.

"Do I have talent?" You will never know if you
never try. Ask rather “Do I enjoy painting?”

Tip: Discover your own strengths and talent. Be
confident to express them on canvas. Enjoy the
process

Many of us are anxious to develop our own style.
Your style is 'you'. It reflects your taste. It is
about what you want to express and how you
express it.

It takes time to develop and mature. It is a result
of endless self searching. That's why it is
unique as each of us is different. Like
handwriting, it should come natural to you.

Style of great artists should be treated as
references. They made us realise that there are
limitless possibilities to create a painting. This
also encourages us to explore and to be open
to new ideas.

Tip: Paint more, see more paintings and
appreciate them. Be sincere to yourself.

and that voice will be silenced. "

Plein air painting is one of the best training for
artists to enhance their drawing and colors
perception ability. It also helps to improve
appreciation level in terms of composition and
aesthetic. Under  challenging circumstances of
rapid changes in lighting, wind, rain and other
human activities, it is exceptionally effective to train
our boldness and decisiveness in handling strokes
and colors.

Bali Art Tour 13 - 18 Jun 2008
To many, this is the first time doing outdoor painting. To some, this
is the first time in Bali.

We were in one way or another anxious about what is in store for us
for the next few days. We were all  aware of the challenges lie
ahead. Plein air painting is different from painting in a studio which
we were so used to. Thankfully, we had come to a place where
sources of inspiration are bountiful.

Bali itself is a cultural haven. The Balinese live and breathe art. Art
and culture are part of their daily lives. Ceremonies, rituals, dance
and  music are seen and heard everywhere. Paintings, crafts,
architecture and interiors are delicately designed and crafted. You
can't help but be moved by the richness of Balinese art and culture.
Bali is also blessed with natural attractions, from sandy beaches to
paddy terraces, lakes and volcanoes. Many foreign artists including
Singapore's pioneer artists were equally inspired by this
enchanting land of art.
For plein air painting, there was no luxury of time and comfort in a studio. We got to choose the
best spot to paint. A best spot that offers nice view to make a good composition and to make
ourselves as comfortable as possible, preferably in the shade. Due to fast changes in lighting, we
were forced to paint fast. We also got to be thick skinned enough to ignore curious onlookers. It
can be a drag to start given the challenges. But once started, we refused to stop and kept
improving – we were determined to make it our best painting.

We gradually adapted to painting outdoor. Our painting speed increased, we learned to focus on
the overall and omit the details. We enjoyed the process while accepting mistakes and failures.
We were satisfied with our effort put in and happy, even surprised with the results and
improvement obtained at the end.

Fruits of the labour tasted extraordinarily sweet after all the hard work. We of course had not
forgotten to reward ourselves with tasty local food, relaxing spas and shopping!
