Tips from our instructors - a series of insights into learning art

Q: What are the challenges faced by beginners who have just started their journey
     of learning painting?
Overly result oriented

Tendency is that many are influenced by
artworks seen before, for example a deco art
and hope to learn the skills to produce
something similar.

Tip : Learn from the nature. Nature itself is the
greatest artist. Be inspired by the nature and
appreciate the natural beauty.
Misconception that learning art = learning
technique

There is a common misconception about art
versus craftsmanship. Keep in mind that art
should not be treated as craft.  In other words,
learning art does not only involve hands alone.
Interpret what you see. Techniques are gained
from the understanding of material
characteristics and the desire to interpret what
you see.

Tip: Remember, learning art is about acquiring
problem solving ability. It is also about learning
to see what to see ie. discover our own vision.
“If we could but paint with the hand what
we see with the eye.”
Honore de Balzac

“In art, the hand can never execute
anything higher than the heart can
imagine.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
More to come in the next issue of our newsletter on the beginner's challenges... on talent and style.
Stay tuned.

Other than art, what are your other interests?
I am intrigued by science too particularly, astronomy. Like art,
it is a way of knowing and understanding the world. I also
    enjoy travelling.

Since when you know you want to be an artist?
There wasn't a defining moment. Art has be part of me since
young. I guess when I chose the fine art stream in secondary
school, it was more or less certain that I would go into art.

What is your first pay check from art?
When I was in art college, I taught art part time. At the same
time, I also did a number of commissioned portraits.

Tell us about your experience in Paris.
It is a great place to be in especially for artists. It offers a lively
lifestyle with endless cultural encounters eg. museums are
opened 24 hours, music festivals, people from all over the
world. A great exposure for artists.

    Who is your favourite artist?
I am inspired by different artists at different stages of my art
journey. From Monet and van Gogh during art college to
modern, contemporary artists. My belief is that, an artist once
passes the learning stage, should search from within.
Discover from your own painting and develop your own style.
At the same time, artists should engage in other forms of
artistic expression, like film, literature, culture, dance.

What is your definition of a successful artist?
When younger,  I equated success with fame. Later I realise
that, being successful means be able to know what you want,
and achieve that. It is important to be able to do what you want
and be sincere in your work. Perhaps, success might just
mean heading to the right direction.
