"Like myself, both my parents were also
trained in the Sciences. Nonetheless, we all
shared artistic predispositions. Pottery and
clay making were my dad's favorite past time.
My mum, on the other hand, an orchid
horticulturist, dabbled a little in orchid
landscaping.

I suppose their artistic pursuits rubbed off on
me and I developed an interest for art. This
interest began from an early age. As an only
child, I seldom had playmates. Instead of
playing, I spent endless hours sketching
characters from comic books and portraits of
people I knew.

In Primary and Secondary School, Arts and
Craft was my favorite subject and I relished in
the creativity-filled classes, while most of my
other classmates thought that it was a waste
of time.

When I got older, sadly, my artistic pursuits
took a backseat in favor of my studies in
science and other social activities. It was only
in university that I picked up art again. I started
with oil painting on my own, but without
guidance, it was difficult to improve.

Last year, I discovered My Art Space and took
oil painting immersion classes with Chankerk
and Wen Shan. They have been instrumental
in helping me build a strong foundation in oil
painting within a short span of 6 months, and I
have since completed about 10 pieces of
work."
"Painting is incredibly
therapeutic
. Once I immerse
myself in painting, all my problems
and ill feelings seem to vanish and
are replaced with joy and
satisfaction. I find that painting with
music helps to enhance the stress-
relieving effects of painting even
further.

Art can be appreciated in almost
every aspect of one’s life- in food,
in the clothes you wear, in the
cityscapes, and even in your
workplace, besides going to art
galleries and museums.

Personally, I appreciate the
aesthetics of the environment
around me. For example, when I
take a walk in the gardens, I pay
attention to the plants, flowers,
scents and ambience that the
scene offers and savor the
moment. Or, when I walk down a
street and see an interesting
building, I take mental notes of the
details of the architecture, and
critique them. "
"I worked for the Ministry of Health and was involved in the evaluation, approval and

project management of public healthcare infrastructure projects such as the new Khoo
Teck Puat Hospital in Yishun and the new government-built nursing

I will be going to Cornell this fall for a Masters in Healthcare Facilities Planning and
Management, with the intention to bring hospitality design and management concepts
into the healthcare setting. My course integrates several disciplines such as
Architecture, Business, Real Estate, Human Factors and Ergonomics. I think this is a
very new and exciting field to be in, especially now since many more healthcare
facilities would be needed to cater to the needs of the graying baby boomers.

I believe that Art stimulates the mind and fosters one’s creativity. This would be
particularly useful for my future career as a hospital planner since my job would need
me to think creatively and generate new solutions towards solving space and design
issues in the hospitals.

Cornell offers many opportunities to continue my interest in art as it is set in one of the
most picturesque districts of New York State. I would be satisfied with just sitting next to
Lake Cayuga and painting Ithaca’s legendary colors of the fall in real-time. But, I
recently heard from a friend that I could take a “Fine Art” elective and even get credits for
it, so I might just go for that option too!"
