"Coming to my art space gives me something to look forward to every week.  Having
a special time and place to share with other art enthusiasts certainly makes the
experience worthwhile.  Chankerk and his colleagues are very generous in sharing
their talent and input.  Chankerk encourages us to explore our abilities to better express
our take on things through art."
Arlyn De Jesus, Filipino

"My Art Space is a wonderful studio located in the Bohemian bustling ...

It is an Art school for free thinkers, a studio for those wishing to become artists, and a
platform for many fine artists to come together.

In my experience as a student at Chankerk's  studio,  I have come to know people of
various nationalities and cultural beliefs and we all come  together as friends united by
our passion for art and without prejudice and without pride.

In fact our school and our teachers are creative and humble people who guide us and
encourage us to express our points of view and challenge us to reach our best abilities.
My Art Space  is more than just a little school where people come together to enjoy,
appreciate and share their ideas and knowledge in Art;

It is a creative inspirational meeting place for people who wish to study art forms and
mediums, encouraged by teachers who support  their students individualism &
creativity."
Polytimi H. Galatis, Australian

"To paint is a challenge. As I am a beginner the learning process is slow and often a bit
stressful to me.

Therefore I greatly appreciate:  the patient teaching method, which provides me with
sufficient advices on techniques,  the freedom of choice of mediums, which enables
me to explore what style I prefer. I feel very much that, the interest in the individual you
show helps to understand the creativity of the artist. I benefit from the instructive talks
and demonstrative drawings at the canvas too.  The library is a good source of
information and works stimulating on what can be achieved.

The activities organized outside class like, exhibition/competition, painting holiday and
newsletter are reflecting the enthusiasm of our teachers and brings out a lively
atmosphere. I would love to see the plein air painting to be stepped up more frequent.
From me a 9 out of 10!!"

"I used to paint when I was young then I stopped because studies and work created a
hectic schedule.
When I was to stay in singapore for a year, I decided to brush up and go back to
painting.

I searched the internet and came across the website of My Art Space... I enrolled and
enjoyed my learningunder the tutelage of chankerk.

He is very accomodating and teaches you the basic principles. He understands you as
a person, yourhuman nature thus he does not dictate or manipulate your talent to
express yourself in your work. I attendedsessions for the whole year and I learned
different techniques, learned how to handle different mediaand most of all, I had fun
and loved what I was doing.

Art expresses or embodies the awareness of the artist, the experience of the artist, his
experience of lifeas a whole, his experience of himself, of other people, even of reality.

As an artist, I believe art can lead to respect, admiration, and other great things such as
making a difference, touching one’s life, making someone smile and most importantly,
making everyone see that everything around us no matter how simple it may be, is
beautiful if only we could just have time to stop for a while and appreciate it. "
Christine Therese Santos, Doctor, Filipino

"Dedicated teacher who believes in a good grounding and very patiently explains,
demonstrates and shares his experiences whilst at the same time allowing growth,
flexibility, and encouraging diversity, in the student's development so as to find his or
her niche."
Hwee Yen, Manager, Corporate Development Dept

"I have learnt the basic principles of "how to see" & paint by respecting what I truly see
from the subject composition… an enjoyable environment of community painting &
great friendship."
Catherina Oh, Senior Conference Manager IBC Asia (S) Pte Ltd

"...helped me improve in the way I look at shapes, colours and compositions from an
artist’s point of view, and not from a copier’s."
Liz Teo, Graphics designer

"I have learnt how to appreciate colours, contrast and see things in a broader
prospective and how to express it into an art piece. The sessions have provided me
with new experience in appreciating art."
Dr Koh Hui Hiang, PhD (UMIST, UK)

"...does not impose rules and allows me to learn through experimenting and
discovering my own style. "
Adeline Chan, Manager in a global MNC

"...does not teach based on a rigid dogmatic system, but instead, recognizes each
student’s individuality and cater to their needs, focusing on developing their own styles
and triggering their creativity. The sessions are fun and relaxed, overthrowing the myth
that learning is a tedious process."
Jixuan, Job-hopper/slacker/student

"...greatly enhanced my photography. creative and fun way of teaching helps me to look
at my own photographic work in a fresh new perspective."
David Chua , Freelance Photographer

"Painting is a self-discovery process, one of the many new perspectives on art that I am
gaining from the sessions. We are taught not only to have the hands of an artist, but
also the eyes to appreciate colours, an open mind to explore the unknown and the heart
to enjoy the process."
Vincent, Engineer

"...constantly urges you to think like an artist. You acquire from sessions not just the
techniques of applying paint to canvas but to do so with feeling. As a result, you see a
piece of yourself on the canvas."
Jo Yen, in-house legal counsel at a Singapore listed company

"...highlights the science behind the art and breaks down instructions into small, simple
tasks that don't daunt a novice learner but build his or her confidence instead…"

"Painting is incredibly therapeutic. Once I immerse myself
in painting, all my problems and ill feelings seem to vanish
and are replaced with joy and satisfaction. I find that
painting with music helps to enhance the stress-relieving
effects of painting even further.

Art can be appreciated in almost every aspect of one’s life-
in food, in the clothes you wear, in the cityscapes, and even
in your workplace, besides going to art galleries and
museums.

Personally, I appreciate the aesthetics of the environment
take a walk in the gardens, I pay attention to the plants,
flowers, scents and ambience that the scene offers and
savor the moment. Or, when I walk down a street and see
an interesting building, I take mental notes of the details of
the architecture, and critique them. "

"Like myself, both my parents were also shared artistic
predispositions. Pottery and clay making were my dad's
favorite past time. horticulturist, dabbled a little in orchid
landscaping.

I suppose their artistic pursuits rubbed off on me and I
developed an interest for art. This interest began from an
early age. As an only child, I seldom had playmates. Instead
of playing, I spent endless hours sketching characters from
comic books and portraits of people I knew.
In as far back as I can recall, I have always somehow been inspired and awed
by the dramatic beauty of the human figure
, in stasis and motion, as portrayed in
traditional mythological and classical paintings, stylized in modern cinema, or
recorded in photographic detail.

This visual empathy with the contours and planes of the human body, especially
the face, compels me to capture and document the image pictorially, which
translated into myriad portrait drawings, from the sketchy to the detailed. However,
I felt that these self studies of the human form were somehow lacking and could
not give full expression to the invisible pulse and rhythm of life that emanate from
human existence.

To extend my visual vocabulary to better articulate such visceral sensibilities, I
took up an introductory course in drawing at My Art Space  in October 2007. At the
studio, I was taught how to see objects differently, which helped me delineate the
complexities of transferring reality into two dimensional images, through tonal
charcoal drawings of clay figurines and still life.
In Primary and Secondary School, Arts and Craft
was my favorite subject and I relished in the
creativity-filled classes, while most of my other
classmates thought that it was a waste of time.

When I got older, sadly, my artistic pursuits took a
backseat in favor of my studies in science and other
social activities. It was only in university that I picked
up art again. I started with oil painting on my own,
but without guidance, it was difficult to improve.

Last year, I discovered My Art Space and took oil
painting immersion classes with Chankerk and
Wen Shan. They have been instrumental in helping
me build a strong foundation in oil painting within a
short span of 6 months, and I have since
completed about 10 pieces of work."

"I worked for the Ministry of Health and was involved
in the evaluation, approval and project
management of public healthcare infrastructure
projects such as the new Teck Puat Hospital in
Yishun and the new government-built nursing
homes.

I will be going to Cornell this fall for a Masters in
Healthcare Facilities Planning and Management,
with the intention to bring hospitality design and
management concepts into the healthcare setting.
My course integrates several disciplines such as
Architecture, Business, Real Estate, Human
Factors and Ergonomics. I think this is a very new
and exciting field to be in, especially now since
many more healthcare facilities would be needed to
cater to the needs of the graying baby boomers.

I believe that Art stimulates the mind and fosters
one’s creativity. This would be particularly useful for
my future career as a hospital planner since my job
would need me to think creatively and generate new
solutions towards solving space and design
issues in the hospitals.

Cornell offers many opportunities to continue my
interest in art as it is set in one of the most
picturesque districts of New York State. I would be
satisfied with just sitting next to Lake Cayuga and
painting Ithaca’s legendary colors of the fall in real-
time. But, I recently heard from a friend that I could
take a “Fine Art” elective and even get credits for it,
so I might just go for that option too!""

more receptive
to new ideas."
I have always enjoyed drawing since
young, the process of capturing a
subject makes you study it thoroughly
and unveils many viewing angles. It
can be very interesting! When you try
to paint the clouds in the sky, you
suddenly notice the immense range
of colors. When you draw birds, you
get to appreciate the elegance of the
curves and lines to its form. When you
try to capture a mood, you will be
impressed at how a stroke laid can
influence the outcome.

I'm a software engineer by training,
and has been with a local software
house muvee Technologies Pte Ltd
for almost 6 years. It is a very dynamic
working environment packed with
interesting characters. My job involves
designing new features for the
software application, code it,
troubleshoot and fix issues that QA
team uncovered or end-users
encountered. It is a rewarding job
where you have new things to learn
all the time.

I think it's quite difficult to tune out art
from life, it is actually so accessible to
everyone. I enjoy listening to music,
visit exhibitions, catch performing arts
or go on painting trips with my friends.
I think the reason I like to engage art
in my lifestyle is because art usually
speaks of originality, and this adds
diversity to life. You can't get bored
with new things

To infuse my art with vitality, I decided to continue my art exploration with the studio in oil painting. The oil painting
classes opened up a multitude of exciting possibilities for my art as I learnt color interaction, appreciation of
brushstrokes and the textural richness of the medium that help me to recreate and distill the essence of the human
form on the canvas.

My Art Space also encourages self learning through browsing groundbreaking artwork of eminent contemporary
artists to find a personal idiom. Also art critique sessions are held regularly to share artwork and opinions in a
convivial setting, which can be immensely insightful . Having practiced at the studio for over a year, its significance for
me in my art exploration journey has transformed from being a mere classroom to a community of like-minded
individuals seeking self expression collectively.

I have been working in the finance industry for the past 4 years, pertaining to trade settlement and asset servicing
aspects of banking operations. For me, art helps to open up new horizons in my visual experience of life and cultivate
a sensitivity for the aesthetic, as I learn to see and distill the essence of things rather than focuson their utility.

This helps me learn to empathize with my peers better as a result, which is important in building rapport at work.

Also, the many art movements created throughout the history of art, and the resulting myriad of variations on the same
subject matter, opened up new possibilities of seeing and this has a liberating effect on my approach towards
problem solving at work, as I continuously challenge myself to exhaust all possible angles.
